High Frontier Range Duty

Tulsa Rocketry is hosting a regional launch Saturday and Sunday, September 26 through 27, 2009 at the Pawhuska Municipal Airport.  We are currently making the preparations to make this a great regional launch.  To that end, we need all Tulsa Rocketry members to try and make some time to help with the launch.  As more details get filled in, this page will be updated.  Check back here often for updates.  For more information on the launch see the High Frontier Information page.

The following are some of the jobs that we need filled.  Look them over and if you see one or more where you can help contact and let him know.  Members are encouraged to volunteer for at least one shift of range duty, more if you can.  You will still have plenty of time to fly rockets.

We are currently planning to run four two-hour shifts of range duty each day.  9:00AM to 11:00AM, 11:00AM to 1:00PM, 1:00PM to 3:00PM and 3:00PM to 5:00PM.  Each shift will need all of the positions outlined below.

Range Safety Officer (RSO)
This is the person responsible for inspecting each rocket for safe construction, etc., before it is allowed to fly.  The RSO will also verify that the flyer has the proper Certification Level for the intended flight.  The RSO must be at least Level 2.

Launch Control Officer (LCO)
This is the person running the PA, announcing each flight and pushing the button.  The LCO will also be responsible for making sure the sky and range are clear to launch and will be responsible for visually tracking each flight until the main chute is deployed, calling "heads up" to warn of incoming rockets, etc.

Pad Manager (PM)

This job includes escorting a group of fliers to the pads, showing the fliers how to switch rods, how to pull the retention pin and drop the pad over for loading, how the pad swivels and adjusts, and providing general assistance to help the fliers get their rockets loaded.  The PM will also collect the fliers flight cards and arrange those cards on the flight board in the same order as the rockets are loaded on the pads.  When all the pads are loaded, the PM will return to the range head and present the flight board with attached flight cards to the LCO.

If we have a good turnout for the launch, we could need additional PM's per shift.  If we have a lighter turnout, we could probably get by with one PM per shift, with the help of the Scouts.

4 pads at 200 feet for J-K impulse
1 pad at 500 feet for L-M impulse
