Phoenix Project Update

To All:

Here is the latest project update:

Fins and Wings - The F&W team devoted most of the day last Saturday to the wings. First a layer of fiberglass was applied to the wing assemblies and they were set aside to dry. Then we continued working on the foam

fairings. After last week's session, we decided that the foam would need to be filled before we could glass over it, and given the porous nature of the foam, this was going to be a difficult task. During the week, we consulted with Joe Grasso regarding the availability of a more dense foam material which has a smoother surface and would not require any filling. Joe made

the foam available and made all the preliminary cuts using his table saw and delivered the new foam pieces to the work site on Saturday. Dan Littmann then made the detail cuts on the new fairings and began the process of

cutting out the forward tapers for each fairing. By next time, we should have the tapers completed and be able to glue the fairings to the wings.

We also prepped the fins for primer, which we hope to accomplish next time as well.

Airframe - Tom Savoie and the airframe team installed the "backbone" for the rail guides into the airframe. The backbone is a 1 x 2 strip of pine which was rounded to match the interior curve of the airframe and then

drilled to accept four blind Ts. The holes for the blind Ts were extended through the airframe and then the entire assembly was epoxied into the inside of the airframe tube. The blind Ts will serve as the mounting point

for the rail guides with the backbone providing a solid internal backing.

The airframe team also touched up several minor surface "dings" on the airframe with Evercoat and then wet-sanded the repairs, making the tube ready for painting.

Motor Mount - The MM team installed small epoxy "dams" in the fin channels. These will be used to prevent the epoxy from running down the channel and away from the fin tabs when the fins are installed.

Trailer - As you may already know by now, our trailer was stolen last Monday night from Accurate Welding. We are considering several options for replacing the trailer, and this will be one of the topics of discussion at the Club meeting this Thursday night. If anyone knows of a good (cheap), used 12-foot trailer, please contact Tom Savoie or me.

Finances - For those who are still making monthly payments on their Phoenix pledge, please bring your next payment to the meeting Thursday night. Given

that we will probably have to buy a trailer, we need your contributions now more than ever.

That's it for now, see everyone at Flight Safety Thursday night.
